Plum Blossoms and Birds. Hanging scroll, ink and light colors on silk. Signature of the artist: “On a lucky day in the jiaping (12th) month in the winter of the bingyin year of the Tienqi period (1626) painted by Chen Jiru in the White Stone Mountains.” Two seals of the artist: “Seal of Chen Jiru” (Chen Jiru yin), “Baishiqiao”.
From a private collection in southern Germany, acquired from Galerie Horstmann in the 1980s - Chen Jiru, style name Baishiqiao, was from Huating (today Songjiang). He was one of the good friends of Dong Qichang (1555-1636) with whom he developed the theory of literati painting. He abandoned an official career and devoted himself to calligraphy, painting and literary and philosophical studies. Few paintings of him have survived, mostly landscapes and paintings of plum blossoms
